Blue urbanism, a term coined by Dr. Timothy Beatley in 2005 in his book Blue Urbanism: Exploring Connections Between Cities & Oceans, describes an approach that integrates ocean and coastal environments into urban planning and design. At its core, it emphasizes sustainable, resilient, and equitable growth by recognizing the deep interconnection between cities and the sea.
While the concept applies broadly, it is especially vital for coastal cities. These communities are uniquely positioned to demonstrate stewardship of marine resources while also facing the frontlines of climate change, sea level rise, and human-driven impacts.
Today, blue urbanism is evolving from an idea into practice. Cities are beginning to reimagine waterfronts, adopt nature-based infrastructure, and embed marine conservation into policy, design, and community life. The potential ahead is vast: healthier ecosystems, reduced disaster risks, stronger local economies, and cities that not only coexist with the ocean but actively help restore it.
Blue urbanism points toward a future where urban development and marine conservation are no longer competing goals, but shared priorities that create thriving coastal communities for generations to come.
